Master Trigonometry for Class 11 and JEE Main with standard angle values, identities, complementary angles, compound angles, double-angle formulas,

Trigonometry – Ye Concepts Strong Kar Lo | Class 11 & JEE Main

Trigonometry Class 11 Mathematics ka ek important chapter hai jo JEE Main mein direct questions ke saath-saath doosre chapters mein bhi kaam aata hai. Agar aapko standard angles, trigonometric identities, compound angles aur double-angle formulas achhe se yaad hain, toh bahut saare questions ko quickly solve kar sakte ho.

Is article mein hum important formulas ko simple Hinglish mein samjhenge, standard values yaad karne ki trick dekhenge, solved examples practice karenge aur JEE Main ke liye useful shortcuts revise karenge.

Trigonometry Class 11 & JEE Main: Important Formulas, Identities and Shortcuts

1. Standard Angles and Trigonometric Ratios

Right-angled triangle mein kisi angle θ ke liye teen basic trigonometric ratios hote hain: sine, cosine aur tangent. Inke reciprocal ratios cosecant, secant aur cotangent kehlate hain.

Yahan:

  • Perpendicular (P): Reference angle θ ke opposite side.
  • Base (B): Reference angle θ ke adjacent side, hypotenuse ko chhodkar.
  • Hypotenuse (H): Right angle ke opposite side, jo triangle ki longest side hoti hai.

Six Trigonometric Ratios

Ratio Formula
sin θ Perpendicular / Hypotenuse
cos θ Base / Hypotenuse
tan θ Perpendicular / Base
cosec θ 1 / sin θ = Hypotenuse / Perpendicular
sec θ 1 / cos θ = Hypotenuse / Base
cot θ 1 / tan θ = Base / Perpendicular

Standard Trigonometric Values Table

0°, 30°, 45°, 60° aur 90° ke values bahut important hain. Inhe yaad karna zaroori hai, kyunki compound-angle aur identity-based questions mein inka frequent use hota hai.

θ 0° 30° 45° 60° 90°
sin θ 0 1/2 1/√2 √3/2 1
cos θ 1 √3/2 1/√2 1/2 0
tan θ 0 1/√3 1 √3 Undefined
cosec θ Undefined 2 √2 2/√3 1
sec θ 1 2/√3 √2 2 Undefined
cot θ Undefined √3 1 1/√3 0

Quick Trick: Sine and Cosine Values

Sine values ko yaad karne ke liye ye pattern use karo:

sin θ = √0/2, √1/2, √2/2, √3/2, √4/2

Ye values respectively 0°, 30°, 45°, 60° aur 90° ke liye hain.

Cosine values ke liye isi sequence ko reverse kar do:

cos θ = √4/2, √3/2, √2/2, √1/2, √0/2

Example: sin 60° = √3/2, jabki cos 60° = 1/2.

JEE Tip: Standard values ko sirf ratne ke bajaye roz 2–3 baar bina table dekhe likho. Isse calculation speed aur accuracy improve hogi.

2. Three Fundamental Trigonometric Identities

Trigonometric identities aisi equations hoti hain jo apne valid domain mein true rehti hain. JEE Main mein inka use expressions simplify karne, unknown ratios nikalne aur equations solve karne mein hota hai.

Identity 1

sin²Î¸ + cos²Î¸ = 1

Is identity se do useful rearrangements milte hain:

  • sin²Î¸ = 1 − cos²Î¸
  • cos²Î¸ = 1 − sin²Î¸

Identity 2

1 + tan²Î¸ = sec²Î¸

Isko rearrange karne par:

sec²Î¸ − tan²Î¸ = 1

Identity 3

1 + cot²Î¸ = cosec²Î¸

In teen identities ko yaad rakhna bahut important hai. Inki help se kaafi expressions ko simplify kiya ja sakta hai.

Example 1: Identity Verify Karo

Prove that sin²35° + cos²35° = 1.

Solution:

Given values approximately:

  • sin 35° ≈ 0.574
  • cos 35° ≈ 0.819

Squaring both values:

sin²35° ≈ 0.329

cos²35° ≈ 0.671

Therefore,

sin²35° + cos²35° ≈ 0.329 + 0.671 = 1

Hence, the identity is verified approximately. Exact mathematics mein identity sin²Î¸ + cos²Î¸ = 1 se directly establish hoti hai; decimal values rounding ki wajah se approximate hoti hain.

Example 2: Find sec θ

If tan θ = 3/4 and θ is an acute angle, find sec θ.

Using:

1 + tan²Î¸ = sec²Î¸

sec²Î¸ = 1 + (3/4)²

sec²Î¸ = 1 + 9/16 = 25/16

Since θ is acute, sec θ is positive.

sec θ = 5/4

3. Complementary Angles and Quadrant Signs

Complementary Angle Formulas

Do angles ka sum 90° ho, toh unhe complementary angles kehte hain. Trigonometry mein 90° − θ ke formulas bahut useful hain.

Formula Result
sin(90° − θ) cos θ
cos(90° − θ) sin θ
tan(90° − θ) cot θ
cot(90° − θ) tan θ
sec(90° − θ) cosec θ
cosec(90° − θ) sec θ

Yaad rakhne ka simple rule: complementary angle mein sine aur cosine ek doosre mein change ho jaate hain. Isi tarah tangent aur cotangent, secant aur cosecant interchange hote hain.

Quadrant Sign Rule: ASTC

Jab angle 90° se bada ho, tab trigonometric ratio ka sign determine karna important hota hai.

Quadrant Angle Range Positive Ratios
I 0° to 90° All six ratios
II 90° to 180° sin, cosec
III 180° to 270° tan, cot
IV 270° to 360° cos, sec

ASTC Trick: All Students Take Coffee.

  • A: First quadrant mein All positive.
  • S: Second quadrant mein Sine positive.
  • T: Third quadrant mein Tangent positive.
  • C: Fourth quadrant mein Cosine positive.

Reciprocal ratios ka sign unke corresponding ratios jaisa hi hota hai: sin aur cosec, cos aur sec, tan aur cot.

Example: Find sin 150°

150° second quadrant mein hai, jahan sine positive hota hai.

sin 150° = sin(180° − 30°)

sin(180° − θ) = sin θ

Therefore,

sin 150° = sin 30° = 1/2

Important: ASTC sign rule ko reference angle ke saath use karo. Sirf angle ka numerical value dekhkar sign guess mat karo.

4. Compound Angles – Addition and Subtraction Formulas

Compound angles ka matlab hai do angles ko add ya subtract karke bane angle, jaise 75° = 45° + 30°. In formulas se aise angles ki exact values calculate ki ja sakti hain.

Sine Formulas

  • sin(A + B) = sin A cos B + cos A sin B
  • sin(A − B) = sin A cos B − cos A sin B

Cosine Formulas

  • cos(A + B) = cos A cos B − sin A sin B
  • cos(A − B) = cos A cos B + sin A sin B

Tangent Formulas

  • tan(A + B) = (tan A + tan B) / (1 − tan A tan B)
  • tan(A − B) = (tan A − tan B) / (1 + tan A tan B)

Note: Tangent formulas tabhi use karo jab expressions defined hon aur denominator zero na ho.

Example: Find sin 75°

We know:

75° = 45° + 30°

Using the addition formula:

sin(A + B) = sin A cos B + cos A sin B

Therefore,

sin 75° = sin 45° cos 30° + cos 45° sin 30°

Substitute standard values:

= (1/√2)(√3/2) + (1/√2)(1/2)

= √3/(2√2) + 1/(2√2)

= (√3 + 1)/(2√2)

Rationalizing the denominator:

sin 75° = (√6 + √2)/4

JEE Shortcut

Jab bhi 15°, 75°, 105° ya 165° jaise angles milen, check karo ki unhe 30° aur 45° ke sum ya difference ke form mein likh sakte ho ya nahi.

For example:

  • 15° = 45° − 30°
  • 75° = 45° + 30°
  • 105° = 60° + 45°

Isse exact surd values nikalna easier ho jaata hai.

5. Double-Angle Formulas

Double-angle formulas mein angle 2θ hota hai. Ye formulas compound-angle identities se derive hote hain aur JEE Main mein kaafi useful hain.

Sine Double Angle

sin 2θ = 2 sin θ cos θ

Cosine Double Angle

Cosine ke teen equivalent forms yaad rakho:

  • cos 2θ = cos²Î¸ − sin²Î¸
  • cos 2θ = 1 − 2sin²Î¸
  • cos 2θ = 2cos²Î¸ − 1

Tangent Double Angle

tan 2θ = 2tan θ / (1 − tan²Î¸)

Ye formula tab valid hai jab tan θ defined ho aur denominator non-zero ho.

JEE Shortcut: Correct Identity Choose Karo

Agar question mein sin θ diya hai, toh aksar ye identity useful hoti hai:

cos 2θ = 1 − 2sin²Î¸

Agar cos θ diya hai, toh use karo:

cos 2θ = 2cos²Î¸ − 1

Agar tan θ diya hai, toh sin 2θ ke liye ye useful form hai:

sin 2θ = 2tan θ / (1 + tan²Î¸)

Is last formula ko sin 2θ = 2 sin θ cos θ se derive kiya ja sakta hai, provided tan θ defined ho.

Example: Find cos 2θ if sin θ = 3/5

Given:

sin θ = 3/5

Use:

cos 2θ = 1 − 2sin²Î¸

= 1 − 2(3/5)²

= 1 − 18/25

cos 2θ = 7/25

Is question ko solve karne ke liye θ ka actual angle find karne ki zaroorat nahi thi.

6. Trigonometric Equations – General Solutions

Trigonometric equation mein unknown angle x find karna hota hai. Lekin sine, cosine aur tangent periodic functions hain, isliye ek equation ke infinitely many solutions ho sakte hain.

General solution mein integer n use kiya jaata hai, jahan n ∈ Z, yani n koi bhi integer ho sakta hai.

General Solution of sin x = sin α

x = 360°n + α

or

x = 360°n + (180° − α)

General Solution of cos x = cos α

x = 360°n ± α

General Solution of tan x = tan α

x = 180°n + α

Yahan n ∈ Z hai. Agar question kisi specific interval, jaise 0° ≤ x < 360°, mein solutions maangta hai, toh general solution se sirf us interval ke solutions select karo.

Radians Mein General Solutions

Radians mein:

  • 360° = 2Ď€ radians
  • 180° = Ď€ radians

Isliye:

  • sin x = sin α: x = 2nĎ€ + α or x = (2n + 1)Ď€ − α
  • cos x = cos α: x = 2nĎ€ ± α
  • tan x = tan α: x = nĎ€ + α

Radians wale formulas mein x aur α dono radians mein hone chahiye.

Example: Solve sin x = 1/2

We know:

sin 30° = 1/2

Therefore, α = 30°.

General solution:

x = 360°n + 30°

or

x = 360°n + (180° − 30°)

x = 360°n + 30° or x = 360°n + 150°

Agar interval 0° ≤ x < 360° diya ho, toh solutions 30° aur 150° honge.

Common Mistake

sin x = sin α ka general solution sirf x = 360°n + α nahi hai. Second family, x = 360°n + (180° − α), bhi include karni hoti hai. Isi tarah cosine aur tangent ke general solutions alag hote hain.

7. JEE Main-Level Solved Question

Question: If tan θ = 3/4 and θ lies in the first quadrant, find sin 2θ.

Options:

  1. 7/25
  2. 24/25
  3. 12/25
  4. 3/5

Solution

Given:

tan θ = 3/4

We need to find sin 2θ.

Instead of separately finding sin θ and cos θ, use this identity:

sin 2θ = 2 tan θ / (1 + tan²Î¸)

Substituting tan θ = 3/4:

sin 2θ = 2(3/4) / [1 + (3/4)²]

= (3/2) / [1 + 9/16]

= (3/2) / (25/16)

= (3/2) × (16/25)

= 48/50

sin 2θ = 24/25

Correct Answer: Option B) 24/25

Why Is This a Useful Shortcut?

Is method mein sin θ aur cos θ ko separately calculate karne ki zaroorat nahi padti. Jab tan θ directly diya ho aur sin 2θ poocha jaaye, toh ye identity calculations ko short kar deti hai.

8. Common Trigonometry Mistakes in JEE Main

  • Standard values confuse karna: sin 30° = 1/2 hota hai, jabki cos 30° = √3/2.
  • Identity ka sign galat likhna: cos(A + B) mein minus sign aata hai, jabki cos(A − B) mein plus sign aata hai.
  • Quadrant ignore karna: Reference angle se magnitude mil sakta hai, lekin final sign quadrant se decide hota hai.
  • General solution incomplete likhna: Sine equation mein dono solution families check karo.
  • tan 90° ko defined samajhna: tan 90° undefined hai, kyunki cos 90° = 0.
  • tan 2θ formula mein denominator ignore karna: 1 − tan²Î¸ zero hone par formula ka right-hand side defined nahi hota.
  • Degree aur radian mix karna: 180° = Ď€ radians aur 360° = 2Ď€ radians.
