IUPAC Nomenclature – Isomerism Basics
Isomerism Organic Chemistry ka ek very important concept hai. JEE Main mein isomerism se direct identification questions ke saath-saath nomenclature, stereochemistry aur reaction-based questions mein bhi concepts use hote hain.
Isomerism ko samajhne ka sabse simple idea hai:
Same Molecular Formula + Different Arrangement = Isomers
Yahan "different arrangement" ka meaning do situations ho sakta hai: atoms ki connectivity different ho sakti hai, ya connectivity same hote hue atoms ka 3D arrangement different ho sakta hai.
Isliye Isomerism ko broadly do major categories mein divide kiya jata hai:
- Structural / Constitutional Isomerism
- Stereoisomerism
1. What is Isomerism?
Isomers aise compounds hote hain jinka molecular formula same hota hai, lekin atoms ka arrangement different hota hai.
Sabse common example hai:
C4H10
Is molecular formula ke do different compounds ho sakte hain:
- n-Butane
- 2-Methylpropane
Dono ka molecular formula same hai:
C4H10
Lekin carbon atoms ki connectivity different hai. Isliye ye isomers hain.
Important point:
Same Formula ≠ Same Compound
Agar arrangement ya connectivity change ho jaye, toh different compounds possible hain.
2. Classification of Isomerism
Isomerism ko broadly do parts mein divide kar sakte hain:
| Type | Main Idea | Examples / Types |
|---|---|---|
| Structural / Constitutional | Connectivity different | Chain, Position, Functional, Metamerism, Tautomerism |
| Stereoisomerism | Connectivity same, spatial arrangement different | Geometrical, Optical |
Is classification ko yaad karne ka easiest way:
Connectivity Changes → Structural Isomerism
Connectivity Same + 3D Arrangement Changes → Stereoisomerism
3. Structural / Constitutional Isomerism
Structural ya constitutional isomerism mein atoms ki connectivity different hoti hai.
Yaani atoms same ho sakte hain aur molecular formula bhi same ho sakta hai, lekin atoms ek doosre se different way mein connected hote hain.
Iske important types hain:
- Chain Isomerism
- Position Isomerism
- Functional Isomerism
- Metamerism
- Tautomerism
4. Chain Isomerism
Jab same molecular formula ke compounds mein carbon skeleton different hota hai, toh unhe chain isomers kehte hain.
Simple language mein:
Straight Chain ≠ Branched Chain
Example: C4H10
First compound:
CH3–CH2–CH2–CH3
Name: Butane
Second compound:
CH3–CH(CH3)–CH3
Name: 2-Methylpropane
Formula same:
C4H10
Carbon skeleton different hai, therefore:
Chain Isomerism
JEE Identification Trick
Agar question mein carbon framework/skeleton change ho raha hai, immediately Chain Isomerism check karo.
5. Position Isomerism
Position isomerism mein:
- Carbon skeleton same hota hai.
- Functional group same hota hai.
- Lekin functional group ya multiple bond ki position different hoti hai.
Example: C3H8O
Compound 1:
CH3–CH2–CH2–OH
Name: Propan-1-ol
Compound 2:
CH3–CH(OH)–CH3
Name: Propan-2-ol
Dono mein:
- Same carbon skeleton
- Same functional group: –OH
- Different position: 1 vs 2
Therefore:
Position Isomerism
6. Functional Isomerism
Functional isomerism mein molecular formula same hota hai, lekin compounds ke functional groups different hote hain.
Example: C2H6O
Compound 1:
CH3–CH2–OH
Name: Ethanol
Functional group: Alcohol
Compound 2:
CH3–O–CH3
Name: Methoxymethane
Functional group: Ether
Molecular formula same:
C2H6O
Functional group different:
Alcohol ≠ Ether
Therefore these are functional isomers.
7. Metamerism
Metamerism structural isomerism ka ek specific type hai. Ismein:
- Molecular formula same hota hai.
- Functional group same hota hai.
- Lekin polyvalent functional group ke dono sides attached alkyl groups ka distribution different hota hai.
Example: C4H10O
Ether compounds consider karo:
CH3–O–C3H7
and
C2H5–O–C2H5
Dono ethers hain, lekin oxygen ke dono sides par alkyl groups ka distribution different hai.
Therefore:
Metamerism
JEE mein metamerism identify karte waqt functional group ko ignore mat karo. Same functional group ke around groups ka distribution check karna hota hai.
8. Tautomerism
Tautomerism ek special type ka isomerism hai jisme do forms rapidly interconvert kar sakte hain.
Is conversion mein generally hydrogen atom ki position aur double bond ki position change hoti hai.
Most common example:
Keto ⇌ Enol
Yahan two forms ko tautomers kaha jata hai.
Basic Class 11 level par tautomerism ko structural/constitutional isomerism ke special type ke roop mein treat kiya jata hai.
Important:
Tautomerism = Dynamic Interconversion
Isliye ise simple static isomer pair ki tarah treat karna appropriate nahi hai; tautomers equilibrium/interconversion ke through related hote hain.
9. Stereoisomerism
Ab aate hain second major category par: Stereoisomerism.
Yahan:
Connectivity = SAME
3D Arrangement = DIFFERENT
Matlab atoms ek doosre se same way mein connected hain, lekin unki spatial arrangement different hai.
Basic classification:
- Geometrical Isomerism
- Optical Isomerism
Example
cis-2-butene aur trans-2-butene ka connectivity same hai, lekin groups ki spatial arrangement different hai.
Therefore they are stereoisomers.
10. Geometrical Isomerism
Geometrical isomerism commonly C=C double bond ke around restricted rotation ki wajah se possible hota hai.
Double bond ke around free rotation possible nahi hoti. Isliye substituents ki relative positions fixed spatial arrangements create kar sakti hain.
Important JEE Condition
Alkene mein geometrical isomerism possible hone ke liye C=C ke each carbon par do different groups hone chahiye.
Each C of C=C → Two Different Groups
Example: 2-Butene
2-Butene mein geometrical isomers:
- cis-2-butene – similar groups same side
- trans-2-butene – similar groups opposite sides
Isko identify karne ka simple flow:
C=C present?
↓
Rotation restricted?
↓
Both C atoms have different groups?
↓
GI Possible
Important Example Where GI Is Not Possible
Consider:
CH2=CH2
Har double-bond carbon par two identical H atoms hain. Isliye required condition satisfy nahi hoti.
Therefore geometrical isomerism is not possible for ethene.
11. Optical Isomerism – Basic Idea
Optical isomerism ko understand karne ke liye sabse basic concept hai chiral/stereogenic centre.
Basic JEE level par agar ek carbon atom four different groups se attached ho, toh woh chiral/stereogenic centre ho sakta hai.
Example: 2-Butanol
CH3–CH(OH)–CH2CH3
Second carbon attached hai:
- H
- OH
- CH3
- C2H5
Yeh four groups different hain.
Isliye yeh carbon ek stereogenic centre act kar sakta hai aur corresponding enantiomeric forms possible ho sakte hain.
Basic shortcut:
Four Different Groups on Carbon → Check for Chirality
Note: Four different groups ka rule basic tetrahedral carbon centre ke liye useful shortcut hai, lekin complete chirality analysis mein molecular symmetry aur other stereogenic elements bhi consider kiye ja sakte hain.
12. Enantiomers
Enantiomers stereoisomers hote hain jo:
- Ek doosre ke mirror images hote hain.
- Non-superimposable hote hain.
- Same connectivity rakhte hain.
- Different 3D arrangement rakhte hain.
Example:
R-2-Butanol ↔ S-2-Butanol
Basic identification:
Mirror Image + Non-Superimposable → Enantiomers
13. Diastereomers
Diastereomers bhi stereoisomers hote hain, lekin woh mirror images nahi hote.
Therefore:
Not Mirror Images + Different 3D Arrangement → Diastereomers
| Feature | Enantiomers | Diastereomers |
|---|---|---|
| Connectivity | Same | Same |
| 3D arrangement | Different | Different |
| Mirror images | Yes | No |
| Superimposable | No | No |
14. Structural vs Stereoisomerism
| Feature | Structural Isomerism | Stereoisomerism |
|---|---|---|
| Connectivity | Different | Same |
| Spatial arrangement | Not the defining difference | Different |
| Main types | Chain, Position, Functional, Metamerism, Tautomerism | Geometrical, Optical |
| Basic question | Atoms connected differently? | Atoms connected same but arranged differently in space? |
15. JEE Main Identification Trick
JEE Main mein isomerism ka question dekhte hi random names yaad karne ke bajay ek fixed decision process follow karo.
STEP 1 – Molecular Formula Check
Sabse pehle check karo molecular formula same hai ya nahi.
Agar formula same nahi hai, toh given pair isomers nahi ho sakta.
STEP 2 – Connectivity Check
Ab atoms kis tarah connected hain, compare karo.
Connectivity Different → Structural Isomerism
Connectivity Same → Stereoisomerism Check Karo
STEP 3 – Structural Isomerism Identify Karo
- Carbon skeleton different → Chain
- Same skeleton + position different → Position
- Functional group different → Functional
- Same functional group + alkyl distribution different → Metamerism
- Interconverting forms involving H/double-bond shift → Tautomerism
STEP 4 – Stereoisomerism Identify Karo
Agar connectivity same hai aur spatial arrangement different hai:
- Restricted rotation around double bond and suitable substituents → Geometrical
- Mirror-image relationship → Enantiomers
- Not mirror images → Diastereomers
Formula → Connectivity → 3D Arrangement → Type

- Metamerism mein functional group check na karna.
- C=C present hote hi geometrical isomerism possible maan lena.
- C=C ke dono carbons par attached groups ki condition check na karna.
- Enantiomers aur diastereomers ko mirror-image relation se identify na karna.
- Connectivity aur spatial arrangement ko mix kar dena.
Most Important Rule
First Check Connectivity. Then Check 3D Arrangement.
20. JEE Quick-Solving Strategy
Isomerism ke questions ko fast solve karne ke liye is sequence ko follow karo:
