Pulley System PYQ | JEE Main Physics 2025 | Constraint Relation Trick

Solve this JEE Main Physics PYQ on a multiple pulley system using constraint equations and virtual work principles. Learn how to relate accelerations

❓ Question

In the pulley system shown, the block A moves with acceleration a2a_2 and the block B moves with acceleration a1a_1.

Find the relation between a1a_1 and a2a_2.

Pulley System PYQ | JEE Main Physics 2025 | Constraint Relation Trick

✍️ Solution

For an ideal pulley system,

∑a⃗i⋅T⃗i=0,\sum \vec a_i\cdot \vec T_i=0,

or equivalently,

∑aiTcos⁡θ=0.\sum a_iT\cos\theta=0.

Contribution of Block AA

Block AA is connected to one tension segment.

The acceleration is along the direction of tension, so

θ=0∘.\theta=0^\circ.

Hence,

aA Tcos⁡0∘=a2T.a_A\,T\cos0^\circ=a_2T.

Therefore,

aA⋅TA=a2T.\boxed{a_A\cdot T_A=a_2T.}

Contribution of Block BB

Block BB is supported by six tension segments.

Its acceleration is opposite to the direction of tension, so

θ=180∘.\theta=180^\circ.

Hence,

aB (6T)cos⁡180∘=−6a1T.a_B\,(6T)\cos180^\circ = -6a_1T.

Therefore,

aB⋅TB=−6a1T.\boxed{a_B\cdot T_B=-6a_1T.}

Applying the Constraint Equation

Adding the contributions,

a2T−6a1T=0.a_2T-6a_1T=0.

Cancelling TT,

a2=6a1.a_2=6a_1.

✅ Final Answer

a2=6a1\boxed{a_2=6a_1}

or equivalently,

a1=a26.\boxed{a_1=\frac{a_2}{6}}.
